About the project

A home steeped in history, reinvented for the future – House Cleasby is a seamless blend of past and present, honouring generational ties while embracing modern living.

“The house was such an odd existing shape that we had doubts in the beginning whether we could transform it successfully. What started as a possible negative turned into a beautiful challenge. The end product speaks of an aesthetic organised chaos that really celebrates the family’s values and needs.”
~ Chris Hattingh, Director Fluid Architects

Once a collection of awkward, dimly lit spaces, the home has been transformed into a light-filled sanctuary where flow and function coexist. Open plan living now connects key areas, creating a natural dialogue between spaces. A north-facing floating balcony extends this openness, offering a built-in braai and an effortless transition between indoors and out—essential for life in a coastal, wind-prone setting.

At its core, the kitchen stands as the heart of the home, visually connected to all public areas on the upper floor. Here, sunsets over the Bushman’s River unfold in every direction, a daily reminder of the home’s remarkable setting. Respecting the original structure, the design intervention is subtle yet profound, enhancing rather than overpowering.

More than just a renovation, House Cleasby is a tribute to family legacy—a place where architectural ingenuity meets the rhythm of life.
