About the project
Set on a prime site overlooking the Bushman’s River, House Warren had always had the location – but not the layout. The original home, lived in and loved for years, felt closed off from the view, dark in winter, and disconnected from its surroundings.
The brief called for a reimagining rather than a rebuild. Working with the existing bones, the team reworked the layout to bring in more light, warmth, and openness. An integrated kitchen, dining, and living space now forms the heart of the home, flowing out to a sheltered back courtyard with an idyllic lap pool. At the front, large openings link the house to its spectacular river views — something the old design never quite managed to do.
“We didn’t want to overwork it. The structure had potential – we simply had to unlock it. Today it’s a practical, easy-going home that connects properly with where it is.”
~ Chris Hattingh, Director Fluid Architects
A new main bedroom was added upstairs, offering a calm retreat with even better views. Materials were kept simple and easy to live with, reflecting the laid-back rhythm of family life on the river.
House Warren has been brought into a new chapter – still familiar, but with a fresh lightness and flow that suits both its setting and its people.
