Residential Alteration and Addition
Kenton on Sea
About the project
Sitting proudly on top as an added third level to an existing outbuilding, the Wienand Pavilion transforms a 1990s post-modernist home in Kenton-on-Sea into a bold expression of contemporary coastal living.
“Our goal was to create a space that felt light, joyful, and completely immersed in the view and surrounding environment – something unexpected that would add both function and enjoyment to the existing home.” ~ Ron Lange, Director Fluid Architects
This light-filled addition redefines the home’s architectural identity – visually refined, spatially open, and joyfully unexpected. Designed by Fluid Architects, the pavilion captures sweeping 180-degree views of the village below and the distant Bushman’s River, while offering protection from prevailing winds and opening generously to catch the northern sun.
More than just an entertainment space, the pavilion blurs the lines between indoors and out. Perched among treetops, it evokes the feel of a luxurious treehouse – playful, serene, and deeply connected to its natural setting.
The addition crowns a carefully restructured layout. Below lies reconfigured guest bedrooms and a study, while the ground level houses an existing garage and new storage space. Each layer contributes to a vertical composition that balances function and enjoyment.
Whether hosting friends or simply soaking in the view, this elevated escape is a celebration of summer living on South Africa’s sunshine coast.
