About the project
Set within a scenic estate near the iconic Stanleys restaurant, House Smithers embraces the beauty of its natural surroundings with a design that celebrates simplicity, openness, and connection to the landscape.
“We wanted to create a house that felt as open and connected to the outdoors as possible – like living in nature without the barriers. It’s a pavilion that’s meant to exist in the landscape, not compete with it.”
~ Chris Hattingh, Director Fluid Architects
The 250-square-meter pavilion-style home is grounded in the principles of contemporary design – thoughtfully placed within the landscape to maximize views and enhance family living. With a focus on seamless transitions between indoor and outdoor spaces, sliding pocket doors open the home up to the environment, offering the freedom to enjoy fresh air and natural light at every opportunity.
Designed as a subtle extension of its surroundings, the home remains low-key, not striving for attention but allowing the landscape to speak for itself. Above, a roof terrace invites quiet moments and breathtaking sunsets over the nearby river. House Smithers is a celebration of contemporary living in harmony with nature – an uncomplicated, yet exceptional, home.
