About the project

Rooted in nature, House Under Milkwood is a quiet masterpiece – designed not to dominate, but to belong. At its heart stands a magnificent milkwood tree, the anchor around which the entire home unfolds. Sensitivity to the landscape defines every element, with the architecture gently nestled into its surroundings rather than imposed upon them.

The existing milkwood tree was such a special feature on the property that every design principle we implemented was a celebration of it.
~ Chris Hattingh, Director Fluid Architects

Here, boundaries dissolve. Screens vanish into cavities, creating floating visual planes allowing inside and outside to merge seamlessly. Sunsets stretch across every horizon, while a protected courtyard ensures sanctuary from the wind. Above, hovering rooflines invite natural light to pour in, enhancing the home’s pavilion-like atmosphere. Even the planted roofs extend the landscape, blurring the line between built form and nature.

Subtle yet exceptional, House Under Milkwood is a home that speaks in whispers—where design serves nature, and excellence is simply understood.

From the client:

For anyone wanting to build or refurbish their dream home Fluid Architects is our strong recommendation. We purchased a phenomenal plot on the Bushmans River in Kenton 18months ago and partnered with Chris and Ron of Fluid. Their combined vision, attention to minuscule detailing, creative and innovative design proposals and deadline deliverables has resulted in a holiday home that surpasses our high expectations. Everyone who enters our home literally gasps at the maximizing of space, light and breathtaking views. From the outset, they listened to our brief and wishlists and managed to not only tick all the boxes but knock them out of the park! It was a hugely enjoyable journey with Fluid where not only do we have our beyond beautiful dream home but have made new friends with our dream team. We wish Fluid all the very best for future projects and look forward to seeing many more of their builds around Kenton. Anyone looking to build especially in Kenton one word of advice? Fluid. Quite simply they are the best!
